Mel Robbins found this trick unexpectedly or by chance during a dark time in her life. She was depressed, anxious, and highly medicated.

It got so bad that she was concerned for her daughter’s safety if left alone with her. being alone with her daughter wasn’t an option for her. She was embarrassed, forty one years old, and didn’t have one feeling of success.

Since then she has written a book, given one of the most popular Ted Talks, and saved more than ten confirmed lives trying to commit suicide.

Her life has flipped completely upside down since this dark period because of what she stumbled on.

Mind Control Technique: Auto-Pilot Mode 

Before I tell you exactly what power she found within and the mental rule she plays with herself hundreds of times a day,I first have to explain the two modes our brains operate in.

The first mode is auto-pilot. Neuroscientists have researched the basal ganglia, a structure in the base of the forebrain.

It is responsible for motor control, motor learning, executive functions, behaviors, and emotions.

This means it is responsible for our routine behaviors or habits. According to Robins we spend 50% or more of the day in this habitual execution mode. When we are in our habit loops we aren’t present or in control.

Do you think about brushing your teeth while you’re brushing your teeth? Probably not. That’s the basal ganglia doing it’s thing and making us humans be more efficient.

I remember one time I was driving to a friends house who happened to live on the exact same route as my best friend, who I saw everyday.

Without realizing it, I had arrived at my best friend’s house instead of the friend I was intending to see. My habits were strong enough to take me off course and send me in the wrong direction.

It’s vital to be aware of this mode in our brain but even more important that we realize it doesn’t dictate our identity. It doesn’t create who we are unless we let it.

This means when you’re depressed or anxious, that’s merely a feeling. It doesn’t mean you are a depressed person. It doesn’t mean anxiety is part of who you are.

Depression and anxiety are thought patterns that create negative feelings.

Take a note and sear this into your brain because this could mean a massive change in your lifestyle and your potent inner dialogue.

Mind Control Technique: Drive Mode

Our second brain mode is located in our prefrontal cortex. This is located in the front of our brain and is responsible for being in control and driving our thoughts.

We tend to wait for our feelings to change us but that never comes. We must change our thoughts first then our feelings will follow.

This is where the prefrontal cortex comes into the equation. We want to be in the driver’s seat of our thoughts and behaviors.

To do this we can’t be on auto-pilot, we must be present. Or maybe “in the moment”

We will always have feelings of fear and doubt,  but when the prefrontal cortex is activated we can face fear, focus ahead, and move forward.

Decisions Aren’t Made With Logic

If I made logical decisions, getting out of bed would be easy 100% of the time.

Do you always feel like waking up?

Do you feel like having that serious conversation that you’ve been putting off for a long time?

Do you feel like doing 10 more reps after it starts to burn?

No, no, no you don’t.

Robins says it best,  “We make decisions based on our feelings and that is robbing you of joy and opportunity.

We must accept that we may never feel strong, motivated, or ready to begin.

We can however, change our life with one five second moment.

Mind Control Technique: The Five Second Rule

5-4-3-2-1…take off like a rocket ship!

There is a five second window between the instincts and urges to do the things that will change your life.

This window only lasts five seconds and you must take action! If you don’t, your brain will wash that thought down the drain.

This trick works because counting backwards requires focus. This hesitation triggers the mind (prefrontal cortex).

The brain will be signaled to direct bandwidth to the hesitation and gives you power to make the decision to change your behavior and thoughts at the same time.

Robins has used this trick to turn her entire life around one 5 second increment at a time. Using this rule hundreds of times a day adds up over weeks, months, and years.

It may seem silly but this trick has been tested and used by over 100,000 people that have seen significant life changes.

These individuals turned their suffering upside down by using this mind control technique, wow!

Our inner wisdom and “shoulds” are always whispering to us. We can teach ourselves to use the 5 second rule, interrupt negative thought patterns, and take action.
